The sun beat down and a soft breeze sent dried leaves scattering over the dusty asphalt. Rising up, the leaves fell back down to be mixed up with a candy wrapper that gusted along several feet together in a colourful swirl, before the mix was stopped by a curbstone.

A loud burst of laughter spilled out into the road as a group of teenagers exited the stadium, spilling on to the ground outside. Things were almost ready for them and the other kids were all arriving from the wider area to celebrate their efforts of the previous day, indeed previous month. All their hard work...At the gates, the teens waved in the coaches, joined by teachers who called for orderly lines, checked off names on lists and made sure there were plenty of bottles of water and for later, baskets of picnic food.

World Hunger Day wasn’t being celebrated as such, as that was a strange turn of phrase when talking about a blight on civilised society, but the schoolchildren had marked it. They had fundraised, researched, planned and communicated, in their own schools and between each other as well. Money was going to charities and they had even set up communication with schools in Bangladesh and Sierra Leone. Letters had been exchanged and the Aussie schools had sent stationery and books. The hope was eventually to skype with them and one day even visit to help out, because that is what the comfortable, privileged children had been taught. World Hunger Day had been a chance for them all to remember that some children were not so fortunate as they were.

Clustered together in rows and rows within the stadium, they all gathered, bright eyed and bushy tailed in their seats, splashes of bright colour in their school uniforms as they sat in blocks. Giggling together, they snapped selfies, chattered, swapped notes, compared the past day, they lived. Then as the last few settled down and the talking stilled and listened as the PA system roared into life and selected teachers and student representatives took to a stage that was decorated with flags and bunting, to address everyone, the big update to be a projected estimate for how much money they had raised.

The sun rose higher with the spirits…

And Famine watched.

Well, it was nice to slip out, wasn't it? Aurora's attention span was as such, that the hockey game they had gone to felt like a year ago now. She had agreed to work with Essex and follow his orders, but she'd be damned if she was going to be holed up again like some sort of animal in a cage. The very thought of it made her skin burn and her blood boil and briefly, the brunette forgot that she had company.

Glancing out of the corner of one of her icy blue eyes, she regarded Lukas for a moment before giving him a feline grin. "We need more shots. Those little green ones. What are the little green ones called again?" she asked, gesturing to the long glass shelves of bottles that hung behind the metal bar. It was one of those 'cool and edgy' places. Suffice to say, it had been ridiculously easy for them to get into the place. They'd no doubt have managed it without the use of powers even. Though one trip to the bathroom revealed a candy shop of drugs, so no doubt a few minors were the owner's most minor concern.

Putting her arms up, across the top of her head, Aurora started to move to the music. Of course she still wanted drinks and lots of them, but she also wanted to dance. It was all intoxicating to someone like her, who could move around like a bolt of lightening. The music, the drink, the people.

"Rum! There should be plenty of rum," the speedster added excitedly in her thick Quebecois accent. "And what are you going to drink?" she asked Lukas, grinning again. No doubt it would be best to load up a tray, or just see if they would give them a bottle. If the barkeeps would not give them a bottle, well, Aurora doubted that any of them could even sneeze as fast as she ran.

Jeanne-Marie blinked, struggling to remember. Why was she here...Where was here? It was so hard to concentrate... The last thing she remembered was the bus station - no, the bookstore in Montreal. She'd been buying a new novel to read and some history texts and then... Bringing her hands up to her head, she rubbed her temples, squinting around the darkened room.

"Hello? Please is anyone there?" As her timid words were met with silence, she repeated them again in French, her voice growing just a little stronger. When nothing came again, she curled up on the strange bench that she had come around on. It was of the sort you found in an examination room, although even more uncomfortable.

"Merde."

The curse was spat after a very, very long silence, full of rancor and spite. What the fuck had she gotten herself into? One minute she was punching ignorant morons in the face, the next thing there was this guy promising her something better in life, everything that she had ever wanted, a chance to exist. And she had fallen for it. God, was she stupid.

Bouncing up off the bed, she sped over to the door, under which came a crack of light and began to pound on it with her fists. They'd hear her all the way away in Chicago if she had anything to do with it...

1. Intelligence: Jeanne-Marie is a very, very smart young lady. No doubt due in part to how fast she can absorb information, she has immersed herself in school books and knows a great deal, especially of religion and humanities. She picks up knowledge and skills quickly and enjoys it as well, which helps the process.

2. Loving: Although she is quite timid, she has a huge heart and the lack of a family around her while she grew up means that she wants one more than anything. Despite witnessing a great lack of compassion from the nuns at her school, she knows that true Christians love those around them, despite their faults and she has a great capacity to care for people.

3.Born Fighter: Jeanne-Marie had one of the worst possible starts to life and suffered a childhood of abuse. But despite all this, she has had only a few moments of weakness and has persevered throughout. Of course, as Aurora, she is a fighter of a different manner but that’s just because she enjoys it.

4. Social: When she is Aurora, anyway. Aurora likes to be known and likes to join the party. She’ll talk to anyone about anything and dance all night if she gets the chance.

5. Learning Skills: While it ties into her overall intelligence, her superspeed also gives her the added benefit of being able to pick up new skills within days or weeks as she can read and retain information at incredible rates.

5. Period dramas ranging from Downton Abbey to Jane Eyre, Sense and Sensibility. It’s the beautiful costumes (and the romance).

Because Aurora does not want to be left out...
6. Clubs...loud music...dancing...alcohol...the works.

7. Her Powers (they agree on something) but really, it’s more to do with the fact she’s a speed freak.

8. Chocolate, as much of it as she can eat. Aurora has found European chocolate to be generally superior and enjoys indulging.

9. Alcohol, specifically very strong and sweet cocktails.

10. Boys, but be warned; all the fun for her is in the teasing and while she gets a degree of it out of the physical side, the chase is what she likes.

Superspeed - Running and Flight:
Along with her twin brother, Jeanne-Marie is probably one of the fastest people on the planet. In theory, she could reach almost light speed if she really wanted to, but the fact that would rip the world apart means she sensibly doesn’t do that, even on her really bad days. Most of the time, she tops out around 750mph but for the sake of conserving her energy, her average speeds are more around 500mph for when she has to run or fly for extended periods. Her stamina will no doubt increase with age, but at the moment she can run and fly for as long as two hours at slower speeds, but if she wants to move at top speeds, then she can only last half an hour at most. Her reflexes put Jedis to shame, as you know, if you move fast, you see fast.

Physical Adaptations:
As stated above, she can fly pretty damn fast. As such, her body and respiratory system are made to cope with flying/running at extreme speeds. Her skin is durable like a natural sort of body armour, but this does not give her any real protection against close quarters combat, knives, bullets, etc, although it can take a minute or two longer to get a needle through her skin for medical purposes. Her muscles, tendons and bones are also tougher than average and her joints are highly efficient at producing lubrication to prevent severe injury from all the strain that her body would otherwise be under.

Her metabolism is through the roof and she burns through alcohol like soda. She can eat all the chocolate she wants and not put on a pound. Of course, it is a little more than what she wants - she has to consume what to the normal person would be an obscene amount of calories to just keep going.

A neat little side effect is that she also had super strength in her legs. It’s not much, but when she learns to hone it, she could leg press about a ton or so. As such, it’s wise to avoid doing something that would make her kick you.

Photokinesis:
This ability is currently dormant until she meets her twin brother. It might just be psychosomatic, but in order to activate this power, she needs to have skin to skin contact with Jean-Paul in order to produce a blinding flash of light. This is roughly equivalent to one million candelas.

Lack of Confidence: As Jeanne-Marie, she is incredibly shy and introverted. She spent her whole life in a charitable institution with an almost complete lack of males around. She does not know how to talk to men or boys, at all.

Temper: As Aurora...she’s a monster. Full of rage for all the things done to her counterpart in the past, if you offend her or hurt her, she will make sure you pay for it.

DiD: Dissociative Identity Disorder is a controversial mental health condition. In Jeanne-Marie, it developed (as it has been noted to in other cases) as a reaction to severe childhood abuse. The personality that manifested, Aurora, was all the things that Jeanne-Marie wanted to be, but was terrified of implementing. She will require careful nurturing and intensive therapy to cope with her disorder and learn how to live without her Aurora personality <s>once someone removes Essex’s tampering anyway</s>

Patience: As a speedster, she moves so fast that when people are slow around her, even in her kinder and more forgiving mindset, she can get really frustrated if people don’t catch on to things quickly enough to keep up with her.

Sheltered: She spent almost her entire life in a charity home/school. With nuns. Says it all, really.

history

Tragedy is one word that can used to sum up Jeanne-Marie’s early life. It should have been so happy. Born just before her twin brother, her parents had a healthy duo on their hands, a ready made little family set. But they died in a car crash, long before either twin could even hope to retain a memory of them. The closest relations could only afford to take on one of the twins and it was an agonising decision for them to make. Of course, they always hoped to one day come to Madame Dupont’s School for Girls to take the little girl home, but they died too and Jeanne-Marie grew up with no real knowledge of them, her parents, or her own twin brother.

The school was a charitable institution, but it was also a religious establishment and veritably draconian in its methods. Despite the often cold and uncaring environment, Jeanne-Marie grew up to believe in the words of the Bible. She found it a comfort, almost pious in the knowledge that no matter what anyone said to her, that if the words of the texts were true, then God loved her even if no one else did. But it was hard. She had very few friends amongst the other girls as she was often taken exception to by the staff and made example of, a Jane Eyre figure in their midst.

Eventually, it grew too much. Years of psychological abuse wore the girl down to shreds and when she was thirteen, she decided to kill herself, even if she ended up in hell. Sneaking up on to the roof of the school building, she jumped. By rights and the laws of physics, the young girl should have been killed but instead, in that very moment she manifested her mutant abilities. But due to her heightened emotional state, Jeanne-Marie had no real concept of what had happened to her and believed that she had been saved by God. When she told the staff, excited to share what had happened, she was met with horror and revulsion at such blasphemy and she was punished severely and repeatedly.

Then Aurora ‘woke up’.

As a way of coping with what was happening, Jeanne-Marie seemed to develop a split personality who was much more fierce than she. ‘Aurora’ had the sense to run away, but she was brought back to the school. When Jeanne-Marie regained control of her senses, she could not remember what had happened, which only resulted in another punishment. To try and break the cycle, Jeanne-Marie tried to bury that wild side of her and with no other way out, put up and shut up until she could get a good education. Being smart, if painfully shy, she did well in class and as she grew older, she became more patient and able to avoid trouble. Not only did she avoid thinking about what might have happened when she had run off, she also put the roof incident out of her head and suppressed her powers too.

Eventually, she graduated. But with no money, no family and nowhere else to go, the best she could hope for was a teaching assistant position at her school. As staff, Jeanne-Marie just hoped that she would now finally be safe from strict discipline and abuse, at least until she could save enough money to move away. One of the good things about her post was that she could nurture the young girls in the school and give them something better than she had been given herself.

On receiving her first pay, she decided to go out to Montreal. It was like a breath of fresh air for her...Until the muggers followed her down the side street. Terrified, Jeanne-Marie dropped her defenses...and Aurora resurfaced for the first time in five years. Years of pent up rage meant that the muggers were made short work of and feeling incredibly smug, Aurora turned around, only to find that she was being watched by a tall, dark haired man who would then make her an incredible offer that she could not refuse.

personality

Jeanne-Marie:
Jeanne-Marie is sweet, but quite timid and undeniably lacking in social skills. For the majority of her life, all she knew was the school that she was raised in which was an almost entirely female environment. As such, she does not know how to talk to boys/men. It’s easier for her to ease into situations, rather than be plunged into them. For instance, meeting a crowd of people would easily overwhelm her, but if she met a couple of people at a time and built up, that would be a lot easier to deal with.

Despite her upbringing, she does truly retain a great faith in religion, but it is more certain practitioners where she is doubtful. She is very naive, but she does not trust too easily as she does not want to be burned or abandoned again. Jeanne-Marie is responsible and quietly very determined to rise above all the pain of her past so that she might become something better one day. She wants to get past all of the stumbling blocks, but knows it will take time - another reason she withdraws and hangs back from people.

Aurora:
Aurora is wild, a extrovert and exhibitionist. She loves being the centre of attention and partying, meeting people and throwing herself into new experiences. Throwing off the dowdy confines of her childhood, she loves dressing in bright colours and revealing outfits. Willing to fight, she will stand her ground no matter what. But she is almost too willing to fight, almost too loud and brazen and a little bit too happy to get into trouble.

Aurora is a side of Jeanne-Marie that surfaced due to trauma. She is all the things that Jeanne-Marie is not, but she is also lacking in life experience and while she might like to party and meet boys, she is not street smart in a practiced sense and can easily get too big for her boots. Right now, she is the permanent persona, as Jeanne-Marie has been suppressed by Essex, as Aurora is far more agreeable to the man’s mission. After all, the world has only been shitting on her, why not take a slice back?
