A Call for Something

Kitty Pryde turned her cell phone over and over in her hand, her feet sunk in the water as she let them dangle over the pier. She had played the conversation she could have in her head over and over again. There hadn't been all that much to do while she was in the bell, after all, but she had never settled on a way to do it then and she certainly hadn't settled on a way to do it now that she was out either. Absently her feet started to churn the water as well, making circles grow out from the pier as she considered what it was she could say to even explain to her parents what had happened and how she was.

She knew that the school had at least said something but eventually Kitty was going to have to face the topic as well. Maybe it would be best to do it face to face but if she couldn't even think of what to say without having the pressure of their expectant eyes on her how was she going to talk to them with them present without making them too afraid and pulling her from the school?

The frustration of it all was almost enough to start bringing tears to her eyes but Kitty had gotten them out ages before and hadn't quite gathered up enough to start something like that again. She muttered to herself, trying to work up her motivation forcing herself to simply dial but no matter how much she tried to uplift herself or tear herself down Kitty simply didn't know what to say if she were to hear the click of the call being taken and a hello on the other line. Maybe she should just drop the phone in the lake and be done with it?

Ring the bell

Kitty let out a breath, not sure if it was shaky because of the uneasiness she was feeling or whether it was actually the excitement coursing through her veins at the moment. She was certainly containing, or at least trying to contain, a good deal of each feelings. The last time that they had made an attempt to bring her out from the diving bell had gone poorly at best. As a matter of fact, Kitty had been terrified she hadn't even made it all the way back into her diving bell after the failed attempt. Maybe there were little particles of Kitty Pryde caught up in the school's air filters or in someone's lung? It seemed silly to think about it now but it had been a real and almost realized fear. This time there was a different plan and, as Doctor McCoy explained it the day before, it at least sounded like a good idea in theory. She just hoped that the practice held up.

She found herself glancing out to Professor Munroe. There was something terribly intimidating about the Professor although Kitty knew her to be nothing but lovely. It was Kitty's nature to be intimidated by a lot of people but this was a different kind of case in her mind. Ororo Munroe was powerful and not just because of her mutation. She had a look about her that Kitty could imagine gave her the ability to say jump and those around her who heard would immediately do so with no hesitating questions about height even flitting through their minds. Some may even do as lemmings would without a second thought but Kitty was fairly sure that was hyperbole or more befitting to if Professor Munroe and Professor Frost were both saying jump from what she had heard.

"So it's sort of like recovering from the bends, isn't it? Not that I've ever done that or anything, just the general idea." She knew she was already babbling before half of those words were out but surely that would give her nerves a way out of her body. "Doesn't sound all that pleasant, the bends, so I don't think I'll go scuba-diving anytime soon." To think, she could step out of this room soon, maybe even the school. It sounded so normal she could almost not believe that was going to be her life again. Did she really even deserve normal when people on the other side of the world now had nightmares about her sore and pus-filled face?

Pestilence Rides

The news seemed to seep in slowly as if it was marinating through her brain and Kitty didn't know what to do with herself. Considering her predicament there wasn't much to do with herself but she was beginning to realize that she had been fooling herself about something pretty heavily now and the wool had just been pulled off of her eyes in the worst way she could imagine. It felt selfish to even think about how it was effecting her when someone else was going through it completely separate from her.

It had been especially bad listening to the family even if she couldn't understand some of the words she heard and didn't hear much else that she could pick out. You didn't need to fully hear a person or understand the language they were speaking to get the gut feelings behind their words. She had heard people shuffling in and out even though the family members had been obligated to not stay it seems. What was it going to be like when she saw her own family again? A pit in her stomach was forming at the very idea of it even though she was sure she needn't worry some of the worries that were coming into her mind. Her parents had always been accepting of her; Kitty had never felt that waver and she didn't think it was going to waver now. That didn't mean that it would be easy and if there was one thing she wasn't looking for it would be seeing their feelings on their faces as they talked to her. She felt the weight of everything she had been through without seeing people look pitying at her thinking about the same things.

Rachel was still too distant and didn't come by but it would be nice to have it happen. To talk to someone who had seen the same things and done the same things would be a relief now but it wasn't something Kitty supposed the other girl was ready for. As for Cecilia? Kitty wasn't ready to see her yet either...she still remembered their meeting in the showers all too well and there was a worry in her mind that superseded her worry about her family. Had she done enough? Everything she could have? Or had she been some weak crying thing that had just burdened those that had been suffering, too? Maybe she wasn't so ready to step out into the world and feel those things she was worrying about now; maybe it was safer in here.

Pestilence Pryde's Debutante Ball

Tagged: Hank

A coming out!

In her short life Kitty Pryde had known excitement. She felt a little surge of excitement every time she had met or surpassed the expectations of teachers or her parents and she had felt a bigger one when she even managed to impress herself. When she discovered her mutation there had been fear but there had also been an underlying sense of excitement, of being different but that also meaning being the future. Her life was sometimes governed by her fear and her excitement meeting in the middle to steer her on something like a straight path that she had been derailed from. Now she was back on her own track.

And now she was feeling that surge of fear and excitement again. "Today's the day, huh, Doc?" She asked with a smile and an actual laugh. There were plenty of worries flitting through her mind but she wasn't going to give voice to them. Surely the same things were at least in the back of Doctor McCoy's mind so she didn't need to tell him but it was hard to not toss off the excitement in the worry of the dome opening up and just merging with the air instead of feeling the ground under her feet.

There were other worries but Pestilence had left her even though the memories certainly wouldn't. Sleeping in a bed would be an experience she hoped that she would at least sleep solidly through but she didn't hold onto too much hope there with those very memories rattling in her mind. Still, she wasn't that anymore and her breathing the air of other people with no barrier wasn't going to be detrimental to either them or herself...it was just the air that was eating away at the back of her mind while she could barely contain her excitement. "You know, I've not even decided what I'm going to do first. Do you have any recommendations?"

Usually Kitty didn't know what to do with herself when she was excited because she was worried people would think she was terribly immature for flailing about with happiness. Now the problem Kitty was having was that she had no room to actually flail around with happiness. She might feel constricted right now but that wouldn't be for long and she could feel the happiness for having a date where Doctor McCoy wanted to try to let her feel unpressured air against her again actually heat up her cheeks. Of course, now she just had to deal with actually waiting for the start of next week to hopefully take the lid off of what had been her home for far too long.

She couldn't help but feel slightly nervous about the idea but a part of Kitty was starting to feel more and more optimistic. She was going to come out of this thing, she wasn't frothing half the time anymore, Rachel was back and seemed in good condition. Of course, she had heard what Cecilia was going through and that certainly didn't fill Kitty with a lot of confidence and she knew full well that out in the world things weren't exactly coming up roses. Still though, with what was going right she couldn't help but think that she was going to be able to start to feel normal again.

That growing optimism for now just made her a bit more anxious to get out and actually do, however. After some pleading to Hank she had gotten him to rig up her textbooks in front of her window but waiting for someone to come turn the page after she had finished with it was no way of doing her work and she could only imagine how behind she was going to be. Then there were other things to worry about and, while composing emails to someone to type up for her parents were one thing, she was still working on what to say to them when she was actually out of this contraption.

Maybe the schoolwork was the safer thing to focus on after all. Kitty rubbed her eyes and yawned, looking back to the window and started reading again, aching to feel the familiar pressure of a pencil in her hand and feel like her again.
